Standard 2: Planning for Instruction
This is a unit plan I designed for a Kindergarten class of 20 students at a Title I school. Throughout the planning process, I gained valuable insights into effective instructional design. I learned how to thoughtfully break down and sequence content to support student understanding. One of the most important takeaways was the value of backwards planning—starting with the end in mind—to ensure that all tested standards were addressed within the available instructional time. Once I identified the summative assessment, I made sure to incorporate multiple meaningful learning experiences that would prepare students to succeed on it.
Below is a Social Studies lesson on how our communication has changed over time through inventions and innovations. I remember changing my idea of the activity many times as I planned this activity. I wanted to make sure that the directions and information were clear and explicit for the students to gain the most out of the lesson. There is a reflection at the end of the lesson where I mention changes I would make to the lesson and activity if taught again.
